Zach Johnson

Varsity Boys Head Coach

Boys - Crew

Zach began his rowing career at Mclean High School in 2007, and also rowed for Thompson's Boat Center as well as Old Dominion Boat Club throughout his time there. He was part of a Junior 2- that earned a silver medal at USRowing Club Nationals in 2009, an Under 19 8+ that finished second at Royal Canadian Henley that same year, and a Youth 8+ that finished 12th at the Head of the Charles in 2008. He began coaching in the summer of 2011 as an assistant coach to the TBC men's program, coached for Walt Whitman High School in 2012, and in 2014 began running the J16 men's program at Thompson's. That year, the J16s first 8+ finished 2nd at USRowing Club Nationals and the second 8+ finished third. Zach returned to Mclean in 2015 as the coach of the Novice men before becoming the Varsity Men's coach in 2016. The TBC J16 8+ has not finished outside 4th place at Club Nationals in that time. Zach is very excited to be working at Yorktown - having raced with and against many formidable Yorktown crews and rowers back in the day (some of which included current assistant coach Fielding Williams), he understands the tradition of excellence that goes along with Yorktown rowing and is committed to adding to it. Zach enjoys the Washington Capitals, developing athletes both mentally and physically, superhero movies, and - most of all - racing. If you have questions about any of those (especially rowing), you can contact him at szachj@gmail.com
