With over 100 coaches on staff, Yorktown is often seeking qualified candidates to coach in various sports. All candidates will be required to pass an APS background check, complete several required online trainings, attend coaches meetings for professional development and show an appreciation for the importance of using athletics as a means for developing social-emotional skills in our young adults.
Below are a current listing of vacancies. Interested individuals are encouraged to reach out to Mike Krulfeld, michael.krulfeld@apsva.us with a resume (with or without prior athletic/coaching experience) and email of interest. Final offers of employment will be made by APS Human Resources after an interview at the school level with the head coach and Director of Student Activities.
Assistant Swim Coach
In conjunction with the returning head and assistant coach, this person will help foster growth and inclusion for students ranging from state qualifiers to those new to the pool. With a team size of over 120, the coaches aim to win championships while making sure each and every participant feels included. This recipe has led to success both in the pool and more importantly, out of the pool where the team raises money each year for mental health awareness, incorporates off-season lifting for physical and social benefits and creates an environment where everyone is a part of the experience. Prior swimming and coaching experience preferred. The swim season runs from mid November to late February with daily practices, Monday-Friday, from 3:30-5 pm and meets typically on Friday nights with some on Saturday evenings. The stipend for this position is up to $3446 for the season depending on time commitment.
Gymnastics Coach
In conjunction with a returning coach, will either serve as primary assistant or co-head coach for this small, but talented, group of young women who often balance club and high school gymnastics with an enjoyment of representing their high school. Practices are 2-3 evenings/weekend days a week with six weeknight meets during the season. The season runs Mid-November to late February. The successful applicant will have prior cheer, dance, yoga or gymnastics experience (competing and/or coaching). Student safety and development is a prime concern given the nature of the sport. The stipend for this position will be based on time committed and role served and will range from $1700 (second program assistant) to $2800 (co-head coach).
Indoor Track Jumps and/or Sprints Coach (Potentially part-time) – This individual will work specifically with those students interested in long jump and high jump and/or sprinters. This can be full-time or part-time (likely more appropriate for the jumps portion). Meets are one day a week. As a member of a five-person overall coaching staff, this individual will have some autonomy in practice times and days, preferably from 3:30-5. The indoor track season begins November 11 and continues until late February. Prior jump and/or sprint experience is required. Stipend ranges from $1500-$2500 depending on number of days applicant can commit.
Junior Varsity Girls Lacrosse Head Coach
Working in conjunction with the other four members of the JV and V coaching staff, this individual will lead the JV team and will have a returning assistant coach. The JV team is traditionally talented and the successful coach will help transition players to the high school game, while focusing on personal and team growth through practices which challenge the girls while making it clear high school lacrosse is fun and enjoyable. A focus on the fun of the game of lacrosse has proven to translate to success on the field with state championships two of the last three seasons at the varsity level. The stipend for this position is approximately $4000 depending on time committed and desire for additional assistant coaches.
