With over 100 coaches on staff, Yorktown is often seeking qualified candidates to coach in various sports.  All candidates will be required to pass an APS background check, complete several required online trainings, attend coaches meetings for professional development and show an appreciation for the importance of using athletics as a means for developing social-emotional skills in our young adults.

Below are a current listing of vacancies.  Interested individuals are encouraged to reach out to Mike Krulfeld, michael.krulfeld@apsva.us with a resume (with or without prior athletic/coaching experience) and email of interest.  Final offers of employment will be made by APS Human Resources after an interview at the school level with the head coach and Director of Student Activities.

Varsity Swim Coach

As the leader of a 150 student team, work with two assistants and the dive coach to foster growth and inclusion for students ranging from state qualifiers to those new to the pool.  The team aims to win championships while making sure each and every participant feels included.  This recipe has led to success both in the pool and more importantly, out of the pool where the team raises money each year for mental health awareness, incorporates off-season lifting for physical and social benefits and creates an environment where everyone is a part of the experience.  Prior head swim coaching experience preferred.  The swim season runs from mid November to late February with daily practices, Monday-Friday, from 3:30-5 pm and meets typically on Friday nights with some on Saturday evenings.  The stipend for this position is up to $5600 for the season.

Varsity Cheer Coach

The varsity cheer coach will work with assistant coaches and lower level coaches to create an inclusive environment for students with an eye toward skill development and team building. The current program is integrated within the school community with a strong presence.  The hope is this will continue while also allowing for growth in competitive skills and performance.  The new coach will be responsible for planning choreography, day-camps (if desired) and all matter related to tryouts and team selection. Practices are daily after school and most Saturdays during the fall season. The winter season is mostly game performances two-three nights a week. The fall season runs August 1 to mid-November with competitions in October and sideline cheer each week (typically Friday nights).  The successful applicant will have prior cheer experience competing and/or coaching.  Student safety and development is a prime concern given the nature of the sport.  The stipend for this position is split for the fall (up to $6676) and winter (up to $4523) seasons.  The expectation is the cheer coach will commit to both the fall and winter seasons.

Head Dance Coach

The head dance team coach will be responsible for working with the Director of Student Activities on a vision for the dance team.  This could include a model similar to past years as described below or a new model with a distinct fall game season and a distinct winter competition season.  Traditionally, selection of the dance team occurs through a tryout process in May.  The program is not a VHSL sport and therefore is able to meet over the summer in preparation for the fall season and/or winter competition season.  The team is supported by a strong parent booster organization with a focus on fundraisers which build interest in dance team in the community, such as one-day clinics and camps.  The team has a long history of kick, pom and game day routines which are performed at each home football game, many home basketball games and in competitions.  The season traditionally has included May tryouts, some summer practices and daily practices starting in August.  The season has culminated in February with the final competitions. The stipend for this position is approximately $4523 for the entire fall and winter season.

Assistant Football Coach/JV Head Coach

The football coaching staff is comprised of approximately ten coaches for Freshmen, JV and Varsity. The team has a long history of success on the field and in coach retention.  Preference will be given to APS employees for this position as a commitment long-term is important to the current coaching staff members.  The successful applicant will serve as the head JV coach and will likely coach the Defensive Line on Varsity.  Prior football coaching and/or playing experience is expected. The season begins August 4 and runs until late November.  The stipend for the position is up to $6676 depending on time commitment and duties performed.
