Sports Tryout Process

Steps Required to Participate on an Athletic Team

In order to tryout for any high school athletic team, a student must meet the following eligibility requirements:

1)  Complete the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Athletic Participation/Parental Consent/Physical Examination From [Revised February 2017]  for the current school year. Turn the form in to the Activities Office PRIOR TO the first day of try-outs.  A new form is required for each school year and the doctor's portion of the physical must be dated after May 1 for the current school year.

The VHSL form can be found under the "FILES & LINKS" section on this website, in the black tool bar at the top of the page beneath the Yorktown main banner.

2)  Read and sign the Arlington Public Schools Athletic/Co-Curricular Participation Agreement which is included as page 5 in the document above. Attach this form to the back of VHSL physical form.

3)  The student must have passed five credit bearing courses during the preceding semester and currently be enrolled in five credit bearing courses.

4)  8th graders may tryout for those sports which are not offered at the middle school level and are sub-varsity (i.e., freshmen level or junior varsity level).  These sports include crew, football, field hockey, volleyball, cross country, baseball, softball and lacrosse.  8th graders wishing to participate must live in the Yorktown school boundaries and attend Arlington Public Schools.
