MANDATORY Rifle Club New Member Orientation: Oct 5 - Oct 8

Joining the Rifle Club

  • Prospective members are expected to complete a four-day orientation session, consisting of instruction in safety and marksmanship skills. In order to become a member of the club and start practice, prospective members MUST attend all four days, and complete each session. At the end of orientation, you will have an opportunity to select a practice time slot (1 hour per week).
  • If you are unable to complete all four days, we will waitlist you until such time as we are able to give a makeup session. Please note that, due to high demand in previous years, we may not be able to take anyone off of the wait list.
  • Please bring the following forms to the first day of the orientation. If you do not fill out the forms in advance, hard copies will be available at orientation. If the forms are not filled out in advance, your parents are required to come in order to fill out the forms in advance of your participation. Forms will be emailed after the information session:
    • VFW Waiver
    • APS Athletic Release Form
    • Data Sheet
    • Emergency Card
    • $30 dues, cash or check payable to Yorktown, Wakefield or W-L Rifle Club.

    • Location: VFW, 7118 Shreve Road, Falls Church, VA  22046
    • Bring a light snack; we will have a short break in the middle.
  • First practice is scheduled for October 13 at the VFW

Expectations

  • Members are expected to attend practice every week. Due to high numbers of interested students, we require that members contact us if they do not plan to come to practice. If a member does not attend for two consecutive practices and does not contact us, we will assume that he/she is no longer interested and will be removed from the roster.
  • Members are expected to arrive promptly, preferably a few minutes early for their timeslot. Members may not be admitted if they are 10 or more minutes late since live fire may have started at that time; late entrance is at the discretion of the coach.
  • Parents are responsible for transportation to and from practice. The coaches will publish the relay schedule with email/phone to set up carpooling if needed.

What to Wear to Practice

  • Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, preferably pants and long sleeves.
  • Members are encouraged to purchase their own eye protection for shooting (available at local sporting goods stores). Prescription eyewear is sufficient for eye protection.

Awards Program

As part of participation in the club, each member’s progress will be recognized through an awards program. At the end of the year, each member will receive certificates indicating the level of expertise he or she has attained, and will be awarded medals at the expert and distinguished expert levels. Club members also have the opportunity to compete with other club members at the Club Championship; awards and trophies are awarded.

About the Yorktown Rifle Program

Yorktown Rifle Club

The Yorktown Rifle Club is an organization dedicated to teaching the basics of rifle marksmanship and safety to interested students who have little or no prior exposure to firearms. The Club holds weekly practices from October through February. All equipment, including rifles, ammunition, and shooting accessories, is provided. The rifles used are single-shot, .177 caliber pellet air rifles. Dues are $30 a year, and will be prorated to $15 if the member starts in January or later.

All students who have not previously taken part in the rifle programs at YHS are expected to start in the Club. Everyone receives instruction on fundamental safety rules and range procedures, and then marksmanship fundamentals, before being allowed to shoot. Club members do not take part in varsity competition. They do participate in qualification programs in which awards are given based on their practice scores, and also may participate in a club championship at the end of the season. The Club serves as the primary source for new Team members.

Hearing and eye protection are both required for participants. It is recommended that members purchase their own eye protection so that they will be comfortable with the glasses while shooting. Suitable eye protection is typically available for under $15 at sporting goods stores. Members who wear prescription glasses while shooting do not need additional eye protection.

Yorktown Rifle Team

The Yorktown Rifle Team is a varsity sport at Yorktown High School during the winter athletic season. The Team competes in the Potomac High School Rifle League, which is composed of high school teams in the Washington, D.C. area, as well as one combined team for high school students lacking teams at their own schools. Students compete in three-position rifle matches using single-shot, .177 caliber pellet rifles. The three-position rifle event is similar to the same event that takes place in the Olympic Games. Students shoot from the prone, standing, and kneeling positions. The standard Olympic course of fire is 40 shots per position; at the high school level, only ten shots per position are fired, with a total time limit of 55 minutes. The league names individual and team champions for the season, and also sponsors a championship match for top individuals and teams in the league.

Students who have demonstrated persistence and skill in Club practice, and who fulfill academic and athletic eligibility requirements, may join the team based on the coaches’ evaluation of their progress. Team members have two practices per week during the winter season. Matches may be held during the week or on the weekends, and students should allow at least two hours in their schedules for home matches, and approximately four to five hours for away matches. Parents are welcome to visit during practices and matches. Hearing and eye protection is required for everyone present on the range while firing is in progress.
